Webinar: TechTalk: Optimize your MySQL sharding by Choosing the Best Sharding Policy | May 22, 2013 1:00pm EDT
Database sharding, used by Facebook, Tumblr and Mozilla, is an incredibly powerful way to ensure MySQL systems scale-out and drive consistent, fast app performance to handle more users, more data, and more workloads.
Nowadays sharding can be automated, but how do you choose the right sharding rules to ensure optimal MySQL scalability and performance for your applications?
In this TechTalk webinar, Doran Levari CTO at ScaleBase, discusses how to:
- Determine if sharding is right for your organization
- Choose the best sharding policy for your applications
- Avoid sharding policy lock-in and data silos
- Shard for Cloud- vs. host-based systems
Learn from ScaleBase’s experience automating the MySQL sharding process.
Register today and learn how to cost-effectively scale growing MySQL databases without disrupting your existing infrastructure.
Webinar: Scaling Out MySQL Databases – Sharding Made Easy | April 18, 2013 2:00pm EDT
Database sharding, used by Facebook, Tumblr and Mozilla, is an incredibly powerful way to ensure MySQL systems scale-out and drive consistent, fast app performance to handle more users, more data, and more workloads. But home-grown sharding is hard, full of caveats, and very often ends up as non-cost effective.
ScaleBase provides an easy to use platform to scale-out MySQL databases. It gives all the benefits of MySQL sharding, while eliminating the biggest challenges associated with sharding.
In this TechTalk webinar, Doron Levari CTO at ScaleBase, explains:
- MySQL scale-out without embedding code and re-writing apps
- Successful sharding on Amazon and private clouds
- Single vs. multiple shards per server
- Eliminating data silos
- Creating a redundant, fault tolerant architecture with no single-point-of-failure
- Re-balancing and splitting shards
Register today and learn how to cost-effectively scale MySQL to handle an infinite number of users, with no disruption to the existing infrastructure.

There are thousands of new online and mobile apps launching every day…but what happens when demand climbs for these apps and databases can’t keep up? The long-term success of any app hangs on a company’s ability to provide uninterrupted access and availability – translation: Database performance and scalability.
Read write splitting is a great way to scale out your database. Just use a replicated cluster (master(s), slaves), those are commodity shared nothing database servers, and distribute sessions workload across them, and gain increasing throughput, and better resource utilization where replication slaves can be used to offload read activity from the master database. It’s simple to understand and simple to deploy.
This webinar will explore the secrets, dos and don’ts, benefits and caveats behind R/W Splitting. We’ll discuss the following:
- What are the principles for R/W Splitting in a way to ensure as even session distribution as possible across servers.
- Can write-mostly application scale with R/W Splitting? Absolutely! See how.
- Can I also gain performance increase in addition to scaling my throughput? Absolutely! See how.
- Replication lag and “reads after writes”. How those can be overcome?
We’ll cover how ScaleBase provides transparent data distribution to its clients, overcoming caveats, hiding the complexity involved in data distribution, and making it transparent to the application. ScaleBase is specifically designed to scale next generation applications without requiring any changes to the existing infrastructure. Below please find our series of webinars addressing these topics:

The long-term success of any app hangs on a company’s ability to provide uninterrupted access and availability – translation: Database performance and scalability.
This webinar will explore the secrets, dos and don’ts, benefits and caveats behind data distribution and parallelization. Automatic data distribution is by far the best way to scale your database, distributing the data as well as session load among commodity shared nothing database servers. We’ll discuss the following:
- What are the principles for distributing the data, in a way to ensure as even distribution as possible as well as ensure distribution of the sessions across servers.
- Parallelism in a high-throughput OLTP environment - good or bad?
- How can data from different nodes can be queried in the same query, how to handle GROUP BY, ORDER BY, LIMIT and so on.

Please find a highlight of his talk below:
MySQL is the most popular relational database for web apps – be it Web 2.0 sites, SaaS applications or any other web app. In most cases, these apps are written in Java and often have lots of users – which translates to a high number of hits/second on their MySQL instance, and a big database size. In the meetup we’ll dive into this particular area of Java applications – the layer between the application and the database.
We will discuss how to optimize the database to better service the increasing the demands from the applications, as well as how to optimize the applications to better handle and exploit database capabilities. A sample of topics that will be covered include: JPA, SQL command optimization, use of database scale-out such as read/write splitting and sharding.
