ScaleBase Releases Version 2.0 of its MySQL Database Scalability Software

12 Feb 2013 / 0 Comments / in Company News, News, Press Releases/by Paul Campaniello

New Version of Data Traffic Manager Supports Infinite Application Scalability, a Sleek New Look and Easier-than-Ever Deployment

BOSTON – February 12, 2013 — ScaleBase, the company that keeps next gen apps and business-critical databases up-and-running, just released Data Traffic Manager 2.0.  It’s the only database scalability software that solves the three biggest challenges next-gen apps face when it comes to increased adoption: scalability, availability and centralized management – by providing scale out through advanced read/write splitting or data distribution in a single solution.  The result: the ability to scale to an infinite number of users and increase performance without requiring any changes to your existing MySQL infrastructure.

This major upgrade comes with a new, user-friendly interface, and gives app providers the most mature and robust way to virtualize their databases, with unmatched ability to:

  • Simultaneously scale multiple applications and databases in a public or private cloud, dramatically reducing the cost and complexity of a distributed environment – something no other database scalability solution offers.
  • Centrally manage and analyze complex, distributed database environments – detailing the operational health and utilization though a new web-based console.
  • Support replicated databases across geographical boundaries, with location-independent load balancing and failover – a business continuity must have.
  • Speed database queries and performance, with advanced read/write splitting, increased throughput and better resource allocation.

“The enhancements in the new version are in direct response to what our customers and prospects are asking for: support for multiple apps, a more intuitive interface and easier deployment,” said Doron Levari, CTO and founder of ScaleBase. “We’re committed to giving app developers and DBAs everything they need to stay focused on app innovation, without having to worry about changing their infrastructure to scale out their apps.”

ScaleBase backs some of the fastest growing databases – including those used by the world’s largest chip manufacturer, one of the world’s largest and most widely respected manufacturers of smart phones and telecommunications hardware and software, and Mozilla, well-known for its Firefox browser.

Database Scalability & Availability: Critical to App Adoption
Next-gen app providers worldwide — including big names like Google, Amazon and Pinterest — are investing massive resources to ensure availability. Outages frustrate users, erode customer confidence and put revenue at risk.  ScaleBase automates failover, eliminating the risk of downtime; automatically detecting database outages and transparently failing over to backup instances – ensuring application availability.

ScaleBase’s Data Traffic Manager 2.0 is faster and easier to evaluate and deploy – and its new user interface gives app developers and DBAs instant access to the critical information they need, all while increasing overall database performance.  With ScaleBase, next-gen apps can scale out cost effectively, to an infinite number of users.

To learn more about scale-out strategies for MySQL databases, join ScaleBase for a joint webinar with 451 Research on February 28, 2013 at 1:00 p.m. EST. ScaleBase CTO Doron Levari will also discuss the new, key features of version 2.0.

ScaleBase Reports Record Year, Signing Several Strategic Partners and Notable Customers

15 Jan 2013 / 0 Comments / in News, Press Releases/by Paul Campaniello

Software delivers scalability and availability – enabling apps to scale to an infinite number of users and eliminating database downtime

BOSTON – January 15, 2013 — ScaleBase, the company that keeps next gen apps and business-critical databases up-and-running, just closed a record growth year, with $10.5m in venture funding and strategic relationships with some of the most innovative and well-known companies, including the world’s largest chip manufacturer, Amazon Web Services, HP Cloud Services and Mozilla, well known for its Firefox browser.

“App adoption is exploding, and databases can’t keep up – evident by recent incidents where widely used apps have been unavailable for hours,” said Ram Metser, CEO at ScaleBase. “Application providers need to scale their databases to an infinite number of users – and in a moment’s notice.  We’re giving them a proven, cost-effective way to do just that.”

ScaleBase – which backs some of the fastest growing databases in the world – improves database performance without changing the existing ecosystem – eliminating worries around database failures and excessive infrastructure costs.  Many application providers are using ScaleBase’s Data Traffic Manager to scale out their databases.  These companies include:

  • The world’s largest chip manufacturer – using ScaleBase to scale out a new line of business
  • One of world’s largest and most widely respected manufacturers of smart phones and telecommunications hardware and software – using ScaleBase to guarantee the availability of its distributed application and database infrastructure
  • Mozilla – using ScaleBase to maximize the scalability, availability and performance of its online app store: Mozilla Marketplace
  • Finger Foods Studios, the up-and-coming game developer company, which, just last month, selected ScaleBase to scale out databases in preparation for an upcoming interactive game launch
  • App Dynamics – using ScaleBase to manage and scale its complex database environment

“The database landscape has changed considerably in recent years with the emergence of new offerings driven by the need to process the increased volume and velocity of data, and the shift to scale-out, distributed architecture,” said Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics, 451 Research. “We have also seen increased desire from IT managers, database administrators and developers alike to rethink their assumptions about databases – still the heart of any strategic IT initiative – in order to meet demands for performance, reliability and economics.”

In addition to winning many competitive deals in 2012, ScaleBase had a breakout year, including:

  • Raising $10.5M in venture funding from Bain Capital Ventures, Ascent Venture partners and Cedar Fund
  • Signing strategic partnerships with industry giants Amazon Web Services and HP Cloud Services
  • Forming a technical partnership with Codership for use of its Galera product
  • Doubling in size, with expanded leadership, sales, marketing and engineering teams
  • Moving to new corporate headquarters with over 15,000 square feet, to handle the company’s continued growth

Next-Gen App Providers at Risk of Database Overload & Downtime: ScaleBase Survey Finds 48% Use Band-Aid Fix; 26% Do Nothing

27 Nov 2012 / 0 Comments / in Company News, News, Press Releases/by Paul Campaniello

New, On-Demand Webinar Co-Hosted by 451 Research and ScaleBase Weighs Pros & Cons of Database and Scalability Options

BOSTON – November 28, 2012 — Next gen app providers worldwide are struggling to scale databases in-step with demand. In a live webinar co-hosted by ScaleBase and 451 Research earlier this month, ScaleBase found that 64 percent of attendees had considered completely ripping out and replacing their underlying databases in order to meet growing demand for apps. That’s a serious undertaking – with a hefty price tag.

In addition, ScaleBase found that:

  • 48 percent of those who attended the webinar are actively adding new hardware (scaling up) in order to address database scalability issues – a short-term, band-aid fix, that’s extremely costly
  • 13 percent are manually distributing data across their databases – time intensive and riddled with human error
  • 13 percent are neck-deep in changing their underlying infrastructure – which disrupts business, delays innovation and requires new technical skills
  • 26 percent are currently doing nothing, however, rather than putting their databases, reputation and revenue at risk, they are educating themselves – validating the reality that everyone must have a scale out plan

“Database users – particularly MySQL users – have never had more choice when it comes to database scalability, which makes picking the best, long-term solution challenging,” said Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics at 451 Research. “Deeply understanding the pros and cons of each option is critical to making the right database and scalability decisions.”

Aslett joined MySQL pioneer Doron Levari, CTO of ScaleBase, and industry veteran Paul Campaniello, VP of global marketing at ScaleBase, in a live webinar earlier this month called “Choosing a Next-Gen Database: The New World Order of NoSQL, NewSQL & MySQL.” Download the webinar to learn more about:

  • The increasingly complex and ever-changing database market
  • The benefits and drawbacks of NoSQL, NewSQL & MySQL databases

Next-Generation Application Companies Select ScaleBase to Maximize Database Scalability & Eliminate Downtime

21 Aug 2012 / 0 Comments / in Company News, News, Press Releases/by Paul Campaniello

Innovative Database Company Backs Web 2.0 Industry with Advanced Database Technologies

BOSTON — August 21, 2012 —Data center outages – which typically last 90 minutes or more – can cost companies more than $500,000 per incident.  That’s in addition to a tarnished brand, and backlash from customers and prospects who expect 24/7 availability – especially from companies offering next-generation apps.

That’s why innovative organizations like Mozilla,  App Dynamics and others have chosen ScaleBase to back their online apps – maximizing database scalability, availability and performance.

“Next-gen app companies need comprehensive, SQL-aware solutions that deliver scalability and availability,” said Sheeri Cabral, database administrator/architect at Mozilla and a widely respected MySQL database visionary. “ScaleBase has a unique ability to distribute data to multiple datacenters across distributed geographies – all while centralizing the management of it – addressing a significant concern for Web companies that need top performance at all times.”

With thousands of new online and mobile applications launching daily, ScaleBase is empowering online gaming companies, digital media providers, social networks and enterprises to think big – without having to worry about database failures, back-ups or infrastructure costs.

“Companies can’t install a new database every time their business grows, volume increases, or online applications outgrow existing infrastructure,” said Doron Levari, founder and CEO of ScaleBase.  “The ability to dynamically adapt to spikes in activity, without interruptions in service or hundred-thousand dollar hardware investments is critical – especially with the massive transactional processing requirements of big data.”

ScaleBase eliminates application and database infrastructure complexity by enabling a fast and efficient response to dynamic business requirements.  The company’s Data Traffic Manager provides an abstraction layer that delivers real-time scalability and availability – without requiring changes to existing infrastructure.

“There is no question that a need exists for database solutions specifically designed to accommodate the increased level of complexity associated with next-gen app companies,” said Paul Burns, Neovise analyst. “ScaleBase’s ability to simplify these environments while seamlessly scaling them gives users a leg-up on the competition.”

ScaleBase Releases Database DBT2 Performance Results

Technology achieves unprecedented transaction speed for a MySQL database at a low cost

Boston, Mass., December 12, 2011 – ScaleBase, Inc. today announced the results of its MySQL database benchmark, based on the industry-standard DBT-2 test. ScaleBase has achieved an unmatched 180,000 Transactions per Minute – the highest result for a MySQL database – while running on an Amazon RDS environment. Cost per Transaction was reported to be 50 cents, which demonstrates the cost-effectiveness of the ScaleBase solution on the Amazon EC2 cloud. Full details of the benchmark can be found at http://www.scalebase.com/resources/performance/.

The ScaleBase Database Load Balancer is a packaged solution for transparently scaling MySQL databases. ScaleBase utilizes two techniques for scaling: read-write splitting and transparent sharding (a technique for massively scaling-out relational databases). The software enables MySQL to scale transparently, without forcing developers to change a single line of code or perform a long data migration process. The technology is ideally suited for any application in which scalability, performance and speed are critical, including: gaming, e-commerce, SaaS, machine-generated data, Web 2.0 and more.

“Some people feel that by using MySQL they stand the chance of limiting their performance options, however, these TPC-C results proves that  this simply is no longer the case,” said Rob Levine, ScaleBase’s VP of Sales. “Without writing specialized code you can still get top performance – perhaps optimal performance – at an affordable rate, accounting for the requisite hardware and infrastructure resources. Especially in today’s economy, getting such great performance and optimizing every dollar spent can save companies substantial amounts of money.”

ScaleBase’s Database Load Balancer solution has been successfully used by numerous customers since its official release in August 2011.

Boston, Mass., August 15, 2011 – ScaleBase, Inc. todayannounced the general availability of ScaleBase 1.0 for unlimited scalability of MySQL databases. ScaleBase 1.0 delivers MySQL performance and high availability, without the need to change a single line of application code. Users of MySQL can download and easily deploy the software by visiting http://www.scalebase.com/solution/.

ScaleBase utilizes two techniques for scaling: read-write splitting and transparent sharding (a technique for massively scaling-out relational database). The software enables MySQL to scale transparently, without forcing developers to change a single line of code or perform a long data migration process. This new technology is ideally suited for any application in which scalability, performance and speed are critical, including: gaming, e-commerce, SaaS, machine generated data, web 2.0, and more.

“MySQL users are constantly frustrated with the inability to easily scale their databases to meet growing demands,” said Doron Levari, CEO of ScaleBase. “ScaleBase puts an end to these frustrations with unlimited, easy-to-use, transparent scaling. With the increasing deluge of data flooding businesses today, the ability to have flexible systems that can grow organically over time is critical for companies of all sizes.”

The ScaleBase Beta program began in January 2011, and the software was downloaded and tested by more than 500 users. ScaleBase has numerous Beta customer-use cases that illustrate the effectiveness of the technology and how it results in significantly faster application performance.

Customer and Industry Feedback

Matthew Aslett, Senior Analyst, Enterprise Software, The 451 Group  (March 25, 2011 report)

  •  “What differentiates ScaleBase is its ability to add scalability without the need to migrate to a new database architecture or make any changes to existing applications.”

SolarEdge (ScaleBase Customer)

  • “Our application has massive data requirements that we weren’t able to meet with a single MySQL database,” said Amir Fishelov, Chief Software Architect of SolarEdge. “We evaluated building an internal sharding solution, and even evaluated some other sharding tools, but at the end of the day we chose ScaleBase for its transparent sharding solution. We’ve seen significantly faster application performance, and couldn’t be more pleased with the results. Our database scalability issues are over.”

Paul Burns, President, Neovise

  • “Scaling up databases is inherently challenging. It gets expensive, performance and availability can suffer, and there still isn’t enough capacity for very large scale applications,” said Paul Burns, president of Neovise, an analyst firm focused on cloud computing. “ScaleBase addresses all these problems by transparently scaling out databases with its unique database load balancer. Customers can take advantage of low-cost cloud or commodity servers while at the same time increasing performance, scale and availability.”

BuildFax (ScaleBase Customer)

  • “We have looked at every option we could find for scaling our existing MySQL database, including switching to NoSQL or NewSQL platforms. We chose ScaleBase because we believe that it is—hands down—the best solution for us.” Joe Masters Emison, VP, Research and Development for BuildFax. “With ScaleBase, we know we can plan to scale for the long-term, without burdening IT staff and database users. ScaleBase technology puts our minds at ease in regards to a critical component of our infrastructure.”
