Next-Gen App Providers at Risk of Database Overload & Downtime: ScaleBase Survey Finds 48% Use Band-Aid Fix; 26% Do Nothing

BOSTON – November 28, 2012 — Next gen app providers worldwide are struggling to scale databases in-step with demand. In a live webinar co-hosted by ScaleBase and 451 Research earlier this month, ScaleBase found that 64 percent of attendees had considered completely ripping out and replacing their underlying databases in order to meet growing demand for apps. That’s a serious undertaking – with a hefty price tag.

In addition, ScaleBase found that:

  • 48 percent of those who attended the webinar are actively adding new hardware (scaling up) in order to address database scalability issues – a short-term, band-aid fix, that’s extremely costly
  • 13 percent are manually distributing data across their databases – time intensive and riddled with human error
  • 13 percent are neck-deep in changing their underlying infrastructure – which disrupts business, delays innovation and requires new technical skills
  • 26 percent are currently doing nothing, however, rather than putting their databases, reputation and revenue at risk, they are educating themselves – validating the reality that everyone must have a scale out plan

“Database users – particularly MySQL users – have never had more choice when it comes to database scalability, which makes picking the best, long-term solution challenging,” said Matt Aslett, research manager, data management and analytics at 451 Research. “Deeply understanding the pros and cons of each option is critical to making the right database and scalability decisions.”
